This page is a printable Bible reading tracker: a checklist of all 66 books and all 1,189 chapters of the Bible, with a box for each book and every chapter number to cross off. Print it straight from your browser (Ctrl+P on Windows, Cmd+P on Mac) or save it as a PDF. It works with any reading plan, any pace and any translation.

There's no sign-up. Download the ready-made PDF just below, or print the checklist on this page. Old Testament and New Testament each get their own table, and the chapter counts come straight from the King James Version text: 929 chapters in the Old Testament, 260 in the New, 1,189 in all.

If you'd rather not keep paper, the Bible Academy app tracks every chapter for you with a calendar and a streak. Both options are explained below.

How to use this Bible reading checklist

There are two ways to tick things off, and you can use both.

  1. Cross off each chapter number as you read it. Psalms has 150 numbers; Obadiah has one. This works with any plan, in any order.
  2. Tick the box (☐) next to a book when every chapter in it is crossed off.

You don't need to read in order. If you follow a chronological Bible reading plan, you'll jump between books, and the checklist still works: just find the book and cross off the chapter. If you're reading at a fixed pace, pick one from our 3 chapters a day plan (2 to 5 chapters a day) or the slower one chapter a day plan.

Want the tracking done for you instead? The app keeps your place in all 1,189 chapters, shows a calendar and streak, and works at 1 to 5 chapters a day.

Milestones to watch for on your tracker

A long checklist is easier to keep when you know where the halfway points are. These are counted from the KJV, reading in the usual order.

MilestoneBy chaptersBy reading time (words)
25% done1 Kings 7 (chapter 298 of 1,189)1 Samuel 1
50% donePsalm 117 (chapter 595)Psalm 59
75% doneJonah 3 (chapter 892)Jonah 4
100%Revelation 22Revelation 22

Why the two columns differ: Old Testament chapters are longer on average than the Psalms, so by the time you reach Psalm 59 you've read half of the Bible's words but fewer than half of its chapters. Psalm 117, the shortest chapter in the Bible at two verses, sits exactly in the middle by chapter count, with 594 chapters before it and 594 after.

O praise the Lord, all ye nations: praise him, all ye people. For his merciful kindness is great toward us: and the truth of the Lord endureth for ever. Praise ye the Lord.
Psalms 117:1–2 (KJV)

How to print this Bible reading tracker

The quickest way is the PDF at the top of this page. You can also print this page directly: your browser can print it or save it as a PDF in a few seconds.

On a computer (Chrome, Edge, Safari, Firefox):

  1. Press Ctrl+P on Windows or Chromebook, or Cmd+P on a Mac.
  2. Under destination or printer, choose your printer, or choose Save as PDF to keep a file you can print later.
  3. Use the preview to pick the pages you want. The checklists are the two tables above; you can print only those pages by entering a page range.
  4. If the Psalms row looks cramped, switch to landscape or set the scale to about 80 to 90 percent.
  5. Turn off "Headers and footers" in the extra settings for a cleaner sheet.

On a phone:

  • iPhone or iPad (Safari): tap the Share button, then Print, and pick your printer.
  • Android (Chrome): tap the three-dot menu, then Share, then Print, and choose a printer or Save as PDF.

Menus change between browser versions, so if a step looks different on your device, look for Print in the browser's main menu or share menu.

Paper tips: Print the Old Testament and New Testament on separate sheets and keep them in the Bible you read, or tape them inside a kitchen cabinet. A pencil lets you start over next year.

A simple weekly reading log

If you'd also like to track days, not just chapters, copy or print this blank four-week log. Write the passage you read in each box, or just tick it.

A tick on the log and a crossed-off number on the checklist is a small thing. Over a year, it's a visible record of faithfulness, and it helps you see the gaps you'd otherwise forget. Our guide on how to stay consistent reading the Bible explains why tracking helps and what to do when you miss a day.

Paper tracker or app: which is better?

Both work. The best tracker is the one you'll actually look at. Here's an honest comparison.

Some people use both: the app for reading and quizzes, and a printed sheet on the fridge for the satisfying pen stroke. If you're weighing apps, our guide to the best Bible reading plan app covers what to look for.

Ideas for using your tracker

Start with a book, not the whole list. Pick one: the Gospel of Mark (16 chapters) or Genesis (50 chapters). Finishing a full row in the first week or two builds momentum.

Track a second time through. Use a different color pen for your second read-through. Two colors on one sheet show how far you've come.

Use it in a small group. Print one copy per person and compare progress each week. Everyone can follow a different plan and still share the same checklist.

Pair it with a quiz. After you tick off a book, test yourself. Bible Academy has free quizzes for every book, like the Genesis quiz and the full Bible quiz hub.

Pair it with a plan. A tracker tells you what you've read; a plan tells you what's next. For a one-year schedule, the chronological plan gives you 52 weekly readings.

Track your Bible reading with Bible Academy

Bible Academy's reading plan covers all 66 books, 1,189 chapters and 31,102 verses (KJV) at your pace of 1 to 5 chapters a day. It shows a calendar, a streak and your progress through every book, so the checklist fills itself. After a reading you can take a short quiz, and every answer is explained with the verse it comes from.

The reader includes the KJV and the ASV, works offline, and supports highlights and notes. The BibleProject overview video for each book is free in the app, a good way to start each new row of your tracker.

Here are three questions on Psalms, the longest row on your checklist:

Quick quiz: Psalms

Which word opens the first psalm?

Which psalm begins with “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want”?

Which psalm begins with “Bless the LORD, O my soul: and all that is within me, bless his holy name”?

Frequently asked questions

How many chapters are in the Bible?

The Bible has 1,189 chapters in 66 books: 929 chapters in the 39 books of the Old Testament and 260 chapters in the 27 books of the New Testament. The King James Version has 31,102 verses. Psalms has the most chapters (150); Obadiah, Philemon, 2 John, 3 John and Jude have one each.

Is there a free printable Bible reading chart?

Yes, this page is one. It lists all 66 books with their chapter counts and every chapter number to cross off. Print it with Ctrl+P (Windows) or Cmd+P (Mac), or choose Print from your phone's share menu. Select "Save as PDF" to keep a file you can print later.

How do I print a Bible reading checklist from my phone?

On an iPhone, open the page in Safari, tap Share, then Print, and choose your printer. On Android, open the page in Chrome, tap the three-dot menu, then Share, then Print, and choose a printer or Save as PDF.

What is the middle chapter of the Bible?

Psalm 117 is the middle chapter of the Bible by chapter count in the KJV, with 594 chapters before it and 594 after. It's also the shortest chapter in the Bible, at just two verses. Halfway by reading time comes earlier, around Psalm 59.

How long does it take to fill a Bible reading tracker?

It depends on your pace. At 1 chapter a day it takes 1,189 days (about 3.3 years); at 3 chapters a day, 397 days; at 3 on weekdays and 4 on weekends, 52 weeks; at 5 a day, 238 days. Each chapter takes about 3 minutes on average.

Does the checklist work with any Bible translation?

Yes. Standard English Bibles such as the KJV, ESV, NIV and NLT use the same chapter divisions for the 66 books, so the checklist works with all of them. Some Catholic and Jewish editions number a few chapters differently (in the Hebrew Bible, Malachi has three chapters), and Catholic and Orthodox Bibles include additional books not listed here.
