The four Gospels describe about 35 individual miracles of Jesus, from turning water into wine at Cana (John 2:1-11) to the second great catch of fish after the resurrection (John 21:1-11). Only one, the feeding of the five thousand, appears in all four Gospels. Below is a full table of the miracles with their references in each Gospel, then a 45-question quiz with answers.

You'll see different totals online: 35, 37, or "about 40". The difference is in how you count. Some lists add the transfiguration, Jesus passing through the angry crowd at Nazareth, or his own resurrection. Others split one event into two, like the healing of Jairus' daughter and the woman who touched his garment, which happen in the same scene. Our table counts each healing or act that the Gospels narrate as a separate event, and leaves out summaries like "he healed many".

John adds a note that every count should keep in mind: Jesus did "many other signs" that were never written down (John 20:30).

Complete list of the miracles of Jesus

The order roughly follows the Gospel narratives, though the Gospels don't always agree on sequence, and dating events precisely isn't possible. "None" means that Gospel doesn't record the miracle.

A few details trip up quizzers. Matthew mentions two demon-possessed men at Gadara (Matthew 8:28) and two blind men at Jericho (Matthew 20:30), where Mark and Luke focus on one. In Mark, the fig tree's withering is noticed the next morning (Mark 11:20). All four Gospels mention the servant's ear being cut off at the arrest, but only Luke records that Jesus healed it.

Every miracle linked in the table has its own story page with the full passage explained and a short quiz. The app has 200+ of these stories, so you can work through every miracle in order.

How many miracles did Jesus perform?

The honest answer is that we don't know, and the Gospels say so. John ends his Gospel this way:

And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.
John 21:25 (KJV)

What we can count is the miracles the Gospels describe in detail, which is about 35. Each Gospel also has summary verses, such as "they brought unto him all sick people… and he healed them" (Matthew 4:24), which stand for many more healings than any list can name.

John is the most selective. He narrates seven miracles before the resurrection: water into wine, the official's son, the man at Bethesda, the five thousand fed, walking on water, the man born blind, and Lazarus. He then explains why he chose them:

And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book: But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.
John 20:30–31 (KJV)

That explains why many Bible teachers read the miracles not only as acts of power but as signs pointing to who Jesus is: the one who brings new wine, gives bread for life, opens blind eyes and calls the dead out of the tomb.

How to use this quiz

In a small group, split it by section. The nature miracles and the raising of the dead make good discussion starters because they raise the question the disciples asked: "What manner of man is this?" (Mark 4:41).

On your own, cover the answers and note every miss. Then read the full passage using the table above. Our Bible trivia questions about Jesus cover the rest of his life in order, and the parables of Jesus quiz does the same for his stories.

Frequently asked questions

How many miracles did Jesus perform in the Bible?

The four Gospels describe about 35 individual miracles of Jesus in detail. Some lists give 37 or more by adding the transfiguration, Jesus' own resurrection, or splitting combined events. John says Jesus did "many other signs" not written down (John 20:30), so the real number is far higher than any list.

What was the first miracle of Jesus?

The first miracle recorded in John's Gospel is turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana of Galilee, which John calls "this beginning of miracles" (John 2:11). Jesus' mother told the servants, "Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it" (John 2:5). The other Gospels don't identify a first miracle.

What was the last miracle of Jesus before his death?

The last miracle before the crucifixion, recorded only by Luke, is the healing of the ear of the high priest's servant during the arrest in the garden (Luke 22:50-51). John names the servant Malchus (John 18:10). After the resurrection, John records one more, the great catch of 153 fish (John 21:11).

Which miracle of Jesus is in all four Gospels?

The feeding of the five thousand is the only miracle of Jesus' ministry recorded in all four Gospels: Matthew 14:13-21, Mark 6:30-44, Luke 9:10-17 and John 6:1-14. All four mention five loaves and two fishes, and twelve baskets of fragments left over.

How many people did Jesus raise from the dead?

The Gospels record three people raised by Jesus: Jairus' twelve-year-old daughter (Mark 5:41-42), the only son of a widow at Nain (Luke 7:11-15), and Lazarus of Bethany, four days after his death (John 11:39-44). Matthew 11:5 also mentions that "the dead are raised" as part of his ministry.
